Choosing The Right Carpet For Your Home

We have hundreds of carpets available to choose from, all ranging in tog, colour, design and style. While a wide selection is great, it also begs the question, which one should I really choose?

Not to fear, Lawlor's flooring experts are here to help you. Let's talk through choosing the right carpet for you.

Some things to consider when choosing carpet:

What is the room/ area? Is it a high traffic zone?

A high traffic area such as a hallway or staircase will be high on visual impact to a carpet, leaving busy foot prints and dirt. You'll need to choose a durable and high quality carpet. Considering the material of the carpet is also important, such as polypropylene, nylon, triexta or polyester for durability.

We also include information on our product pages regarding the suitability of each carpet, advising uses such as heavy domestic or medium contract.

Does the room have underfloor heating?

Not all carpets are suitable for underfloor heating. This is an important factor for you to look out for when carpet shopping. It is suggested that the best carpets to accommodate underfloor heating are those with a tog rating of 2.5 or below.

So, what's a tog rating?

As you may know from other cosy objects such as duvets, a tog rating indicates the insulation efficiency of a product. Underlay similarly holds a tog rating, individual to the specific brand and product.

The higher the tog rating, the more effective it will be at retaining heat, and the better it will be as an insulating material. However you must be aware that a lower tog rating is necessary for underfloor heating, while a higher tog rating will work to insulate the heat itself.

Look out for a carpet's cleanability

It is very important to research the cleaning methods of your preferred carpet before you buy. Our carpets provide information like this on all product pages, and displays in store, with most being bleach cleanable. This gives you the freedom and peace of mind that the carpet you chose is strong enough to withstand a stain, spill or splash. After all, we're all only human, right?

Do I need underlay for my carpet?

All carpets need underlay, except for a felt-backed carpet. If you are going to lay a carpet straight onto concrete, it's essential that the carpet has a synthetic backing.

Underlay drastically helps maintain your carpet, as well as providing an extra protective layer against moisture. We recommend that you invest in a good-quality synthetic underlay to provide extra cushioning and a barrier between your carpet and the floor.
